汉英翻译技巧：如何避免重复？

英汉两种语言在结构上的一个重大差异是：英文怕重复，而在汉语里，有些词语会反复出现。在这种情况下，译文该如何处理呢？下面为大家介绍6种方法。

一、集中处理重复出现的词

当句子中多次重复出现同样的词，甚至出现排比句时，我们可以考虑合并同类项，用一项来加以概括。

例如：要用两代人、三代人、甚至四代人来实现这个目标。

It may take two, three, or even four generations to reach this goal.

再看2006年11月CATTI三笔汉英真题：

从1978年至2003年的25年间，中国经济年均增长9.4%。25年前，中国年国内生产总值为1473亿美元，去年已达到14000多亿美元。25年前，中国年进出口贸易总额为206亿美元，去年已达到8512亿美元。25年前，中国外汇储备为1.67亿美元，去年已达到4033亿美元。

我们看到，这是一个排比句，通过25年间的先后对比，具体说明中国经济增长状况。我们看看官方参考译文是如何处理的：

In the course of 25 years between 1978 and 2003, China's economy grew by an average annual rate of 9.4 percent, with its GDP, foreign trade and foreign exchange reserves jumping from147.3 billion US dollars, 20.6 billion US dollars and 167 million US dollars to over 1.4 trillion US dollars, 851.2 billion US dollars and 403.3 billion US dollars respectively.

官方译文巧妙地合并了同类项，先把“25年”提到句子最前面，然后再将国内生产总值、进出口贸易、外汇储备三个关键词合并，用了with独立主格结构连接起来。由于这几项数据在25年间都有大幅度增长，所以统一用了非常形象的"jump from……to……respectively"来表示，而不是用普通的"increase"。

二、使用代词

这是比较常用的避免重复的手法。常见的代词有he/she, it/them, former/latter,that/those等。

例如：

这样做，有百利而无一害。总之，大家都要从大局出发，照顾大局，千方百计使我们国家经济发展起来。

If these things are done, they can have only good results. In short, everyone should proceed from the general interest, always bear it in mind and help develop the economy by all possible means.

这里使用代词"it"指代“the general interest”。

现代化就要靠发展科技和教育，以教育为本。

Modernization hinges on science and technology and education, with the latter as the basis.

这里以the latter代替前面提到的education。在英语中，the former和the latter都是常用来避免重复的手段。

我们再来看看代词that。

要提倡科学，靠科学才有希望。

We must promote science, for that is where our hope lies.

我们的改革和开放是从经济方面开始的，首先又是从农村开始的。为什么要从农村开始呢？因为农村人口占我国人口的百分之八十。

We introduced reform and the open policy first in the economic sphere, beginning with the countryside. Why did we start there? Because that is where 80 per cent of China's population lives.

就我们国家来讲，首先是要摆脱贫穷。要摆脱贫穷，就要找出一条比较快的发展道路。

For China, the first thing is to throw off poverty. To do that we have to find a way to develop fairly rapidly.

通过以上例子，可以看到，that的指代范围很广，可以指代名词，指代地点，也可以指一件事情。

三、使用倒装句

不论脑力劳动，体力劳动，都是劳动。

All work, be it mental or manual, is labour.

这里“劳动”连续出现三次，如果照译，会显得很别扭。译文先以all work概括，接着用了一个倒装句be it加形容词，说明各自的特点，最后用一个labour就解决问题了，是一种很巧妙的手法。

世界上一些国家都在制订高科技发展计划，中国也制订了高科技发展计划。下一个世纪是高科技发展的世纪。

Some countries are drawing up plans for the development of high technology. China has done so too. The next century will see rapid development.

老科学家、中年科学家很重要，青年科学家也很重要。

Veteran and middle aged scientists are important,and so are young ones.

无论前文说了什么，用so就可以指代。值得注意的是，在用so引出倒装句的句型时，不要忘记连词and或者but。

四、使用省略句

在句子中重复出现的成分，可以省略，以避免重复。

我们希望自己发达，也希望你们发达。

We hope that we shall develop and that you will too.

君君，臣臣，父父，子子。

The king should behave like a king, the minister a minister, the father a father, and the son a son.

五、换一种说法

如果不用代词替代，那么还有没有避免重复的办法呢？有。我们可以在原文重复的地方换不同的说法。在阅读外文报刊中，经常会看到这种做法。如前面提到苹果公司Apple，后面通常会用the tech giant来代替。提到特朗普总统，再提到另外一国元首时，会用counterpart来代替。

在《90天攻克CATTI二级笔译》一书中，韩刚老师总结为十大汉英翻译技巧之一的“千变万化增张力”。例如在2007年5月的二笔汉英第一篇介绍四川大熊猫自然保护区的文章中，多次出现了“自然保护区”一词。韩刚采用的词分别为natural reserves, new shelters, natural refuges, conservation areas, sanctuaries依次进行了替换。

另外，在前面提到的2006年11月CATTI三笔汉英翻译中，韩刚老师提供的译文版本为：

Over the 25 years between 1978 and 2003, China's economy recorded an average annual growth rate of 9.4%, and its GDP surged to 1.4 trillion US dollars from 147.3 billion US dollars. The past 25 years also saw China's total foreign trade shoot up from 20.6 billion US dollars to 851.2 billion US dollars and its foreign exchange reserve soar to 403.3 billion US dollars from a mere 167 million US dollars.

该译文在表述“增长”这个意义时，分别用了surge, shoot up和soar三个词。可见，为了避免重复，需要积累相关近义词来进行表达。

六、使用缩略词

有时候，我们还可以使用缩略词，让译文变得更为简洁。

例如，在2017年11月CATTI二笔中译英第一篇中，多次出现了“中医药”。官方提供的译文版本中，在第一出现时，翻译为traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)，在后面出现时，则全部采用缩略词TCM。另外，像“一带一路”（Belt and Road Initiative）通常也使用“BRI”来进行代替。

以上6种避免重复的方法，基本涵盖了CATTI考试种常见的类型。在考试中遇到类似文章时，可以考虑灵活应用其中的方法，以避免重复，让自己的英语行文更加地道。
